Michael R. Stewart

Michael R. Stewart joined the firm as an attorney, bringing with him more than 25 years of experience in the criminal justice system and a uniquely comprehensive perspective on criminal law.

Mr. Stewart’s career spans both law enforcement leadership and prosecution at the highest levels. Most recently, he served as a Deputy Prosecuting Attorney in the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victims Unit, where he handled complex felony cases involving domestic violence and sex offenses, advocating for vulnerable victims through every stage of the legal process.

Prior to his work as a prosecutor, Mr. Stewart built a distinguished career with the Lake County Sheriff’s Department, where he rose to the highest rank of Captain and served in several critical leadership roles. As Chief of Detectives, he oversaw criminal investigations and ensured compliance with evolving legal standards. He also served as Commander of the Lake County/Gary Metro Homicide Unit, leading high-profile homicide investigations, and as Supervisor of the Lake County Drug Interdiction Unit, where he worked in collaboration with federal and state agencies to dismantle major drug trafficking operations. His efforts contributed to the seizure of millions of dollars in illegal drugs and currency and played a role in significant criminal prosecutions, including complex, multi-agency cases.

Mr. Stewart’s investigative expertise includes advanced cellular analysis in coordination with the FBI’s CAST team, large-scale drug trafficking investigations with the DEA, and forensic interviewing of victims through the Indiana Child Advocacy Center. His experience gives him rare insight into how cases are built from initial investigation through arrest, prosecution, and trial and where they can be effectively challenged.

In addition to his public service, Mr. Stewart has provided pro bono legal representation through the Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence, assisting victims in protective order hearings and family related legal matters.

Mr. Stewart is a graduate of Valparaiso University School of Law, where he earned his Juris Doctor cum laude, graduating in the top of his class. He also holds a Bachelor’s degree from Saint Joseph’s College and is a certified law enforcement officer, having completed training at the Northwest Indiana Law Enforcement Academy. His academic achievements include a perfect score on the Indiana State Criminal Law Exam.

Notably, Mr. Stewart previously worked with Stracci Criminal Defense as both a law clerk and associate attorney, making his return to the firm a meaningful full-circle moment.
